Description
White-breasted nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) perched on a tree trunk. The nuthatch is the only bird to walk down a tree head-first. The white- breasted nuthatch inhabits woodland and forests throughout North America. It feeds on insects, which it finds by running up and down the trunks of trees probing at the bark. It also feeds on nuts, which it opens by wedging them in a crevice and hammering at them with its stout bill. It is a small bird, reaching a maximum length of around 14 centimetres. Photographed in Michigan, USA.
