Description

The Red-Breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is a small songbird with blue-gray upperparts, rusty orange underparts, white face, black eye stripe, and a black crown. It measures about 4.5 inches in length and about 0.35 ounces in weight. It breeds in the Northeastern and Western United States, Alaska, and Canada in coniferous forests (particularly spruce and fir), and may migrate southwards depending on food supplies available. It feeds by gleaning insects from bark crevices on tree trunks and branches, usually climbing downwards head first. It also eats seeds from conifers.

This Red-Breasted Nuthatch perched on a branch was photographed in Sax-Zim Bog, Minnesota, on the cold, overcast, and snowy afternoon of 2-4-2017. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 500mm f/4.0E FL ED VR lens to capture this image. Sax-Zim Bog is located in St. Louis County, Minnesota, about an hour north of Duluth. It is comprised of over 300 square miles of state, county, private, state forest, and wildlife management lands. It is an Important Birding Area (IBA) and is home to breeding Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and Boreal Owls, as well as other species of birds and animals.
